Dear All,

The weekend saw the Midland Regional Student Indoors at Sheffield,
and one of the most open tournaments I've ever been too. With
qualifying places only open to the top 4, there were at least seven
teams who were in with a chance of winning the tournament. The
first upset of the tournament was last years champs, Bears, losing
first place in their pool to Mwnci See of Aberystwyth, and later
Superfly losing their crossover game to Low Flying Children (juniors
from ???????? - was going to check on the BUF pages but they appear
to be dead this morning).

Speaking of Juniors, increasing the tournament from 16 to 18 teams
meant it was good to see 3 juniors teams at the tournament, and as I
said to Tatva Rats (after I circumvented all this talk about student
eligibility by graduating 6 months ago and still managing to play at
at a student tourny- although only as a pick-up for a team with only
4 players) it won't be so good to see them in a few years time when
they come back and solidly whip our collective asses.

Anyway, back to the tournament....
First game of the day on Sunday for the top 8 teams were the QFs,
with the added spice of qualification places at stake. Mwnci See beat
PhatEds II? in sudden death, Jesters cruised through against
L.F.Children, before game of the tournament took place.

Because they finished 2nd in their pool, Bears came up against the
much fancied Phat Eds I playing on home turf. In a tense and heated
game (which would have made a great final) with two large sets of
supporters, the game was very even. Phat'Eds scored to tie the game
with about a minute to go, only for the previous catch to be
disputed. A drawn out discussion followed (apparently about who had
the right to call the catch in or out) during which time the clock
ran down. After much debate the score stood and the game went into
overtime, only for the Bears to score and make it into the semis.

The final QF was between Fingers6 I and Purple Haze I. For a third
time this QF went to sudden death overtime, this time Purple Haze
winning the prized final point.

The fact that all the QFs were close affairs (certainly compared with
last years QFs) shows what a hard tournament this was to qualify
from!

The semi's were won by Bears and Mwnci See respectively, and the
final round of games, played on the full size pitch and fantasy
Frisbee scorings rounded off the tournament. PhatEdsII had done
remarkably well and reached the 5/6 play-offs where they met their
own first team (with a tentative and unconfirmed 5th qualification
place possibly, allegedly and rumoured to be available should more
court-time be made available in Exeter). At one point the 2nds were
leading 3-1 and a major upset looked possible, before the first team
reasserted themselves.

Phat'EdsIII won the spoon, and Bears II took the plate, then the
final came between Bears I and Mwnci See. If some people reading
this are wondering just who the hell Mwnci See are, then you should
know that they are a team from Aberystwyth, who've only been formed
for less than a year, and contain 99% new players (only Alex Evans of
UTI has any experience to speak of). To reach the final in their
first crack at the Student Indoors is nothing more than brilliant in
my eyes.

But enough of this sycophancy, they lost to Bears in the final who
had the edge in terms of organisation and cutting ability, but MS
made it very difficult for them.

Spirit award went to Mwnci See II, which made me very happy because
that's who I'd picked up for when they went down to 5, then 4
players, so I got a swig of vodka before making the drive home.
Cheers lads!

Special thanks should also go to Simon Weeks and the PhatEds for
organising and running another well run tourney.

Love & Luck,
Lawrence
Fingers 6 but picking up for Mwnci See 2, PhatEds4 and anybody else
who'll have me, what a tart!
