I appreciate the point Giles (most recently) made regarding old
experienced hands setting up new teams - some teams would (sadly)
possibly never attend a tournament without their experienced players.

But what do you do about those teams who can field experienced players
to win, at the expense of the keen-but-still-undertalented recruits,
especially where the clubs are large (eg Southampton, Warwick,
Leeds?...) Obviously it's up to someone to make a decision, but does the
player (Steve Shipley, for example) elect not to play for the team
(Bears) because they have plenty of people without him, or does the team
field it's strongest possible team, despite the player not being a
regular part of their team, in order to win games and maybe titles, and
what does the institution prefer?

Or does the BUF issue some rules?

If the experienced players coached the beginners throughout the year
(Aaron, I don't include you in this) rather than dominating their game,
would they need the experienced players on pitch? Or would they survive
well enough with them on the sidelines, as before, coaching?

Would the experienced players have the commitment to "merely" coach at
the Student events? It struck me that they may not have that commitment.
(Before somebody burns me to bits - I don't know that I could attend a
tournament without hoping to play, unless I was in plaster!)

The opinions expressed so far (and there must be more!) seem to be that
the rules should change - but it's a bit late now to change them for the
Student Indoors - one Regional event has already occurred (so someone
would probably be at a disadvantage) and it's surely worth maintaining
consistency for the National Championship.

Maybe stop hassling for a little while but keep the ideas and opinions
flowing, let Si Weeks write a couple of essays, and then sort it all out
in time for the Student Outdoors?

PS: Where *exactly* can the BUSA (and someone mentioned another
organisation, but I've deleted the mail) eligibility rules be found? I'd
like an URL or book name - NOT an set quoted to BritDisc!
