Dear All,

I have been reading the e-mails on student eligibility with much
interest and would like to throw my twopence in for good measure.
So far lots of good points have been raised on all sides: yes, it is
a bit dodgy to allow 1 or more eternal students to dominate a side
and even a tournament at student level. In addition we would not
want postgrads to be put off from starting up new teams on the basis
that they would be barred from playing at student national level.
(Remembering that there are lots of 'mixed' tournaments where
eligibility isn't in question). There have also been good points
raised on the difficulties some people have if they are postgrads but
have only just started playing. We don't want to discourage these
people either.

What all this leads me to believe is that there can be no hard and
fast rules on the subject. I'm pretty sure there is someone in
charge of student nationals who sits on the BUF. Couldn't that
person get together with a couple of others and form a kind of
eligibility committee deciding each case on its merits. The invites
to student nationals would clearly set out that every team would be
under a duty to inform the committee and request an eligibility
ruling on any candidate it wasn't sure of, setting out any arguments
it would like to be considered. The judgement of this committee
would be based on certain agreed guidelines loosely aiming towards
the promotion of good quality student Ultimate.

I know this may seem like a hassle but it would only have to be done
once a year. You would have a deadline by which time all eligibility
applications would have to be made and then all the applications
could be considered together. It sounds like there would be quite a
few applications made but I don't think an unmanageable number of
these would be contentious.

Thanks for having a read of this to all those who got this far but I
would like to add as an aside that when I played for the Bears in my
first year on the B Team we came last in every single tournament we
entered. That team included Steve Shipley, Rachel and Shirley all of
GB fame. In our last year we won several tournaments including
Newport with not a postgrad among us.
