Hey guys,

I just thought I'd lend my support to the move to revise the new 4 year
rule which has received so much attention on this list in the last
couple of weeks. I won't join in the debate, since there doesn't seem to
be much of one - everyone seems to broadly agree.

However, someone did ask for written details of the eligibility rules
for BUSA competition, and since I have them in front of me, I thought
I'd chip in on that point.

The idea, as I understood it, was that moves ought to be made to come as
close to the regulations of other BUSA organised sports as possible, to
hasten our inclusion in the national student sports body. I have been
reliably informed by our Union Vice-President (Sports) that Sports Council
recognition is a condition of entry to BUSA, so we obviously have a long
way to go. Simply adhering to the guidelines for other sports will
acheive nothing for us until we have Sports Council recognition.

However, the relevant information on eligibility can be found in the
BUSA Handbook 1997-1998 (copies available from BUSA, 8 Union St, London
SE1 1SZ, 0171 357 8555).

Firstly, there is no limit on the experience of players. As far as
players from 'other institutions' goes, here is a relevant excerpt...

7.1 For a student to be eligible for BUSA Individual championships or to
represent his/her university in BUSA Team Championships and in
Representative games, he/she shall be:
7.1.1 A player who is permitted to play by the governing body of the
sport concerned to participate alongside amateur competition in that
sport.
7.1.2 An 'internal' student registered at a University or Institution in
membership of the BUSA, and following a course of study recognised by
that University.

blah, blah...

If we were to adopt these rules now, we would have to exclude all of
those students who do not have Ultimate clubs at their Uni, but play for,
and practice with nearby university teams. I think this would be a
mistake, and one which it is unecessary to make since our acceptance to
BUSA depends first on getting Sports Council recognition, and then
adopting the rules. I think that Sports Council recognition should be a
priority, and once that is (inevitably) acheived, we can go back to the
rules, and decide whether it would be in the interests of ultimate to
join BUSA. By then, it is possible that most Unis in the country might
have teams, so fast is the current growth, and the BUSA rules could be
adopted without concern.

Locks,
Mohawks.
