The third annual Dublin Ultimate tournament took place this past weekend. Despite the biblical amount of rain on the Friday night, and rather muddy pitches on Saturday, this tournament was easily the best Ultimate Ireland has ever seen. We had a record 15 teams make the journey 'across the water' to Dublin. The early games on Saturday were a bit ragged, as the pitch quality deteriorated. At least one party piece involved a mass team mud slide. However, since the rain held off, the pitch condition seemed to stabilize. At the end of Saturday, First Touch seemed to be cruising in on a repeat of their victory last year, conceding less than 5 points in their first four matches.

The party at Keatings on Saturday night was packed with the sounds of Samba, and many a pint o' Guinness being drunk. I don't remember too much from it, but it seemed to me that most people had a good time.

Sunday morning's first matches again were a bit ragged, not only due to the 'black stuff' underfoot but also the 'black stuff' consumed the night before. The semi final between the Pookas and Shooting Sorcerers was quite a learning experience, from the Pookas perspective. The crisp play by SS was more than the Irish hosts could handle. Still, the Pookas managed respectful 5 points against the Sorcerers' 14.The other semi between First Touch and Janitors was a more balanced affair, with the final score of 11 - 8 not quite reflecting the closeness of the game right up to cap.

The final between Janitors and Sorcerers was a compelling clash of teams and styles, with the precision and pin point passing of the Sorcerers contrasting with the go ho, huck-fest of the Janitors. It made for an exciting final, with layouts galore, and excellent end zone bids. In the end, the Sorcerers prevailed, with a 14 - 10 victory.

Thanks again to all who took the time and expense to make it over. It was the first tournament for many players on the UCD squad and it gave them a real flavour of the highs and lows of the game. In particular, their games against the Lurkers, First Touch and the Bears gave them the greatest opportunities to learn both the technical and SOTG sides of the game. All in all, this tournament gave Ultimate in Ireland a real boost. Thanks also to the Pookas who billeted cash strapped teams for the weekend, especially Sally, Brid, Simon and Keith.
