Before I begin, I'll admit to being a little sour at discovering we
won the spirit vote in only our second ever outdoor tournament and
didn't end up getting it. I have brought together a collection of
totally new players to the sport who would have gone ape about
winning Spirit. But what follows is not driven by that (well, not
much anyway).

What the hell is going on with spirit? Wayne quite rightly said
"Nobody else seemed to notice" who the Spirit vote went to, yet
somebody did notice a cock-up in the final positions.

I applauded, and still do, the advent of the Tour. It makes Ultimate
feel more like a proper sport and forces teams to be more organised
(take things more seriously), but has anyone else noticed a slight
malady in spirit as a result? Ultim8 as I see it is about the best 8
teams in the country, and everyone else trying to be one of those 8.
It makes sense that at the highest level of the game the way spirit
manifests itself is going to be different (not an attack on spirit of
top teams - so don't have a go), but what about below that? I came
across some pretty raw attempts at spirit this weekend.

Back to the spirit award this weekend. I guess it might be fair to
say that we should have been there, but we stayed until the end of
the final, and then got the hell out of the rain. We had no idea (we
thought our spirit was pretty poor this weekend), and so we left. I'm
as guilty as the next man for not noticing or caring who got spirit,
but it is still important to Ultimate in this country isn't it?
I remember telling people that I was recruiting for the new team that
winning was very important, but that the Spirit of the Game was
essential to the sport. I think some people got involved for that
very reason. Let's not lose sight of that.

Cheers
Colin
