Hi all. Message for Londoners only...

LONDON ULTIMATE SESSION STARTS THURSDAY
=======================================

If you live or work in London, play or are interested in playing
Ultimate, you should be coming along to this...

Here is info for everyone planning to come to Clapham Common for the
summer league/pickup game thingy. Read carefully, as there's some
important changes compared to last year. Please print out and pass it on
to anyone not on e-mail.

Main points
-----------
* We start this Thursday, the 14th May. Arrive around 6.45, playing by
7.15.
* New location - see below
* Because of Rotterdam etc, the league won't get underway for two weeks.
Pickup game(s) until then.
* Neil Travers is sorting the league teams - register with him from here
on.
* Web site now updated with maps etc.

Where
-----
Finally got confirmation from Lambeth Council. We have two of the
football pitches at Clapham Common officially booked for our use on
Thursday evenings. This means we can throw people off them if they're
already occupied when we get there. No more trekking around looking for
somewhere to play.

The pitches are NOT where we played last year however. They are pitches
"3 and 4", which are towards the north-west end of the Common. There's a
map on the website which shows where they are, but basically, if you're
walking from Clapham Common tube station, walk along the north side of
the Common (i.e. along Clapham Common North Side - that's the name of the
road) for five minutes and you will see the pitches on your left. Do not
walk along the main road towards Eagle Pond and the Windmill Pub where we
were last year - that's the wrong way.

It's about the same walking distance from Clapham South tube as well,
though you'll have to cut across the common somewhere.

Sadly, Lambeth have changed their minds about marking the pitches for us.
Apparently they have a one-day (!) football tournament going on later
this year, and aren't prepared to confuse the poor soccer players with
any additional lines.

Advantages of this site
-----------------------
* We've managed to book it. Lambeth don't want us to play at Eagle Pond
this year anyway, because they're trying to repair the football pitch
there.

* The two games will be right side-by-side for once.

* It's much nearer Clapham Junction BR station. May be useful for Croydon
and Brighton based players.

* It's quite good in terms of attracting outside interest - there's a
well-used footpath running alongside this space, and also you get great
rush-hour traffic jams on North Side - loads of bored car-drivers with
nothing better to do than watch us.

* The grass there is some of the best on the Common (though not the best
you've ever played on).

* No goose crap to dodge.

Disadvantages of this site
--------------------------
* It's a longer walk to the pub afterwards.

* It's on a slight slope. The football pitches are marked out across the
gradient, not up and down it, so if we want to use any of the lines
(suggest we do), we have to put up with this. Let's see how it works out.

* A bit less "picturesque" and sheltered.

* May have to dodge dog crap. But not much worse in that respect than
anywhere else on the common.

League
------

Neil Travers has been good enough to agree to sort out the league teams.
Because Neil's away this week, and it's Rotterdam next week, we'll start
the league the week after that. This gives us time to sort teams, and
time for other people to sign up (we still need more players - I'm sure
there's loads of you who are intending to play who haven't been in
touch). In the meantime, we can have (hopefully) two pickup games running
side-by-side for the first two weeks.

If you want to play in the league, get in touch with Neil at
neil@dreamer.demon.co.uk and tell him:

* your name
* your home phone
* a daytime phone no if poss
* your e-mail (if you have it)
* the team you normally play for (e.g. Gun, First Touch, etc)
* whether you're a "definite" or a "maybe"

The last bit is quite important - key part of ensuring that the league
works. Basically, "definites" are expected to show up just about every
week (at least, every week that your team has a league game, which is two
out of every three). If you don't think you'll be able to do this, but
you'd still like to play in the league when you can make it, sign up as a
"maybe". Please, if you can commit to showing up regularly, then it would
be appreciated if you declared yourself a "definite".

Web site has been updated
-------------------------

Visit http://www.ultimatum.demon.co.uk/lus/

There you'll find a new map with the location of the pitches marked. Also
a bit more information about how the league will work this year.

Phew. Hope to see everyone on Thursday. Spread the word. Looking forward
to another huge turnout this year.

Any problems, drop me a line

Thanks

Paul
