> Could anybody please tell the irish team, mainly simon!

I presume you mean me.

> "Why the fuck an irish team could not play at Southampton?"

In the heat of the moment (say in a game) somebody might have
an outburst like this. But then again, on email, you had a
chance to read it back to yourself, and then decide whether
or not to send it to me, or to BritDisc, or even to re-phrase
the question. (Since you obviously want to have this
discussion out loud, I have replied to BritDisc.)

The quick answer is that you didn't pay in time, according
to the rules that we have in place to try to make it fair for
everyone when a tournament is over-subscribed.
Unfortunately, Southampton is heavily over-subscribed, and there
are quite a few other teams who also haven't made it into
the tournament.

I don't expect you to have any idea how much time and energy has
been spent trying to prevent this situation arising, but I take
my position in the BUF particularly seriously, and it weighs
quite heavily on me when players don't get to play ultimate for
some "bureaucratic" reason like not paying in time.

This is the 9th tour event. It is the 6th that has been
oversubscribed in relation to the original setup of having
24 teams. In every case, the TDs and the ultim8 committee have
worked on a solution. This is the FIRST TIME that teams that
entered have been completely turned away.

> Is this for the benefit of irish frisbee?

No. It may have escaped your notice, but this is a
British Ultimate Federation event (see below).

I can't answer for everyone obviously, but from my point of
view its pretty exciting that there is the beginnings of
an ultimate scene in Ireland. I hope it continues to grow, and
I know that most players in Britain are likely to be keen
to encourage and help Irish Ultimate.

But British Ultimate is hardly a booming success!

Players here have been making huge efforts for a long time to
improve the game in Britain, and we continue to make progress.
But it doesn't just happen instantly.

The Tour is one part of the BUFs plan's to help improve UK Ultimate.
And that is what I believe it is doing. I'm sure that when it
is possible to embrace the aspirations of Irish Ultimate at the same
time then everyone will be delighted, but when its not possible
our first responsibility is to teams from this country.
Under the current rules of the tour, if a foreign team enters in
time to get into a tour event under the normal procedure, then
they get a place at the event. If they do not manage to do that,
then they are treated the same way as all the other UK teams.

I have been concerned for a while that maybe this puts the foreign
team at a disadvantage; but I prefer that to a situation where
a home team is at a disadvantage. Nonetheless I have, and will be
putting thought to how we might make entering tour events simpler
for foreign teams.

Can I also take this opportunity to remind you about the BUF
Open in Eastbourne, which has been set up specifically with
the aim of being an international event. I suspect that you
will see more details about this soon.

There is nothing wrong with your money (at least not that I know
of). If you talk to Peter, he will be able to tell you more about
what happened re your entry to Southampton; and also about the
situation with the Exeter tournament which I hope will not suffer
from the over-subscription problem.

I hope this goes some way to explaining. The bottom line however,
is that I'm totally gutted that teams have had to be turned away
from a tournament, and I'm sorry that you are in one of those
teams. I'd like to repeat my apologies to all the other teams
that haven't got in (if any of those people have got this far).

All the best - hope to see you in Exeter AND Eastbourne,

Si

ps - I'm not a big fan of aggressive, abusive emails to/about me
(esp. posted to the whole of BD).

pps - I can't help you with your quest to buy Nike Sharks - but
let me know if you find some, because I have a suggestion about
where you can shove them.
