21st Japan Open Championships

Utsunomia 3-4-5 November 1996

3 days of intense competition among some of the fastest little guys
youll see on an Ultimate pitch.

The University teams fared well against the old boys and geo teams,
with the entry to this tournament being decided by three regional
tournaments in Eastern Japan (Hokkaido, Tokyo etc), Central Japan
(Nagoya etc), and Western Japan (Osaka/Kobe Kyushu etc). Of the 16
teams competing 10 teams came from the Tokyo area, 3 from Central,
and 3 from Western Japan.

There were 3 teams with foreigners playing, the strongest being CREWS
who won a tight 3-4th playoff against LOQUITOS, the BUZZ BULLETS from
Osaka and (my team) the Nagoya NUTS. I used to play for the Coventry
Cheetahs, for those of you with long memories...

The sun shone on Monday for the semi-finals and finals of the ladies
and open competitions. The Open final saw the BOMBERS dig deep on
their well of experience to edge out the BARBARIANS (from the
sports university) 18-17 after the BARBARIANS led 16-15 at time.
This was a top-flight exhibition of hard cutting inch perfect passing
Ultimate, played in the best of spirits with less than 10 fouls
called in the entire game.
The LADY BARBARIANS were similarly edged out by the SPIRALS in a high
speed, highly skilled game.

As for the humble crowd from Nagoya we finished a smiling 13th,
having taken a good number of points from seriously better teams than us
(lost 17-11 to the BARBARIANS), beaten the other teams from our region,
and made some new friends....

Guy

(A note to the cost conscious, the entry to this competition was US$60
EACH, after US$40 each for regionals, after JFDA membership... ouch!)
