WUCC99 - What’s the BIG ISSUE Idea?

As you may already have heard, this year’s World Club Championships in
St.Andrews is going to be a fund-raising event for The Big Issue Foundation,
Scotland. In essence, the idea is that WUCC99 players, staff and spectators
will raise money for the charity in return for exposure and publicity for the
competition and the sport. There will be prizes for the teams and individuals
who raise the most cash.

This flyer is designed to explain the thinking behind the association of
WUCC99 with The Big Issue Foundation, Scotland and to outline how and why we
would like ALL players, staff members and teams to get involved in
fund-raising.

THERE IS NO OBLIGATION TO GET INVOLVED, BUT THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF THE IDEA
DEPENDS ON THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT INDIVIDUALS AND TEAMS PUT IN.

What is The Big Issue Foundation?

The Big Issue Foundation, Scotland is a registered charity, providing vital
services to Big Issue vendors and other homeless people. Every year the
Foundation hosts an Open Hogmanay in Glasgow, where homeless people can come
for practical help at a difficult time of year. They also run education,
training, health and small business development services. The Big Issue
Foundation believes strongly in offering homeless people a hand-up, not a
handout, and all projects are developed with this self-help ethos in mind.

We think the charity, its ethos and the image of the magazine are all highly
compatible with Ultimate’s dynamism and emphasis on self-reliance and spirit,
and that our association with The Big Issue Foundation could prove mutually
beneficial.

What’s in it for the sport?

In short, more positive exposure for the tournament and the game than would
otherwise be possible. Providing we put effort into fund-raising, The Big
Issue in Scotland will run ads for WUCC99 in the run up to the event and plans
a double page spread on Ultimate in the week of the tournament. It may also
be possible to persuade The Big Issue in other parts of the UK to run the
article.

Associating the sport with an established and compatible charity is also going
to help in attracting interest from TV, radio and the press, raising the
profile of the tournament and making it easier to attract sponsorship for the
sport, both in the short term - for participating players, teams and WUCC99 in
general - and in the longer term - for the BUF, national teams etc.

What’s in it for your team?

A higher profile for WUCC99 is a plus for any team seeking sponsorship -
whether simply for kit and equipment or on a larger scale. Potential sponsors
want to know that their company name is going to receive maximum exposure to
their target audience through you and your team. Association with a good
cause is an added bonus. As fund-raisers, you should find it much easier to
get the kind of publicity - in local newspapers, on regional TV and radio etc.
- that will attract and maintain a sponsor’s interest.

In addition, all teams raising in excess of a certain sum (probably L1000)
will receive prizes from the tournament organisers. (Details to be announced
- The Big Issue Foundation, Scotland is currently plying its corporate backers
for appropriate gifts!)

What’s in it for you?

As you probably already know, the most frequent source of sponsorship for
individual Ultimate players is currently funding from their own employers.
Many companies and organisations are very receptive to employee requests for
financial support, providing they get something in return. Approaching an
employer not just to request “money to play frisbee” but to ask for “support
in your efforts as a participant in a well-publicised, international sports
event in aid of a famous charity” should increase your chances of success
significantly!

The top individual fund-raisers - whether players or staff members - will be
presented with prizes on Finals Day at WUCC99 (details to be announced).

What do you have to do?

Each team needs a Big Issue rep whose job it will be to co-ordinate
fund-raising and keep in contact with us. Volunteers please let us know who
you are ASAP!

You can begin fund-raising as soon as you wish. Remember - all individual and
team fund-raising will take place IN ADVANCE OF the tournament, so that the
amounts collected by each person/team can be totalled up and prizes awarded on
Finals Day (Saturday 14 August). For this reason, you need to collect the
money you raise BEFORE coming to Scotland - pledges are no substitute for cash
and will not count towards your total!

We will be issuing forms and further information soon. Come and talk to us,
e-mail or phone if you have any questions, or have any suggestions about how
to make the idea work better.

Cheers !
