why on earth should people who have the benefit of
computers at work be favoured by paying less than
those who haven't access to the internet? You might
argue that, some one who has access can print off
copies for the team members who don't? O.K., well
what's to stop just one team member paying full
memebership and printing copies off for the whole
team. Let's be fair and have every one paying the
same, with discounts for students and un-employed.
If the only difference between the two membership fees
is as you suggest the "postal and administrative
costs", I fail to see where the savings for the BUF
would be.If I pay less but don't receive an Ultimatum,
I am the only one who has made any saving. I think
it's important not just to think of ourseleves but how
we can all contribute, wouldn't you agree Roger?

People have suggested that this should be done through
the web, others have
rightly countered that this would disenfranchise those
without web access.

How about an affiliation fee which reflects the cost
of your affiliation?

One of the main costs highlighted has been posting a
newsletter to your
door. We could therefore have a £25 fee for those
requesting a newsletter
and £20 (or less depending on the postal and
administration costs) for those
accessing the newsletter via a website. People with
limited bandwidth could
be emailed an Acrobat pdf file to peruse at their
leisure, print off,
photocopy and distribute at will (good promotional
tool I would have thought
- they can give copies to friends/relatives,
especailly when there's a
photo/mention of them).

Such a tiered structure would raise initial setup
costs slightly as there
would be two types of member, but that would quickly
be recouped through
saved printing, postage and stamp-licking costs and
therefore merits serious
consideration. If anybody can argue sensibly against
such an approach,
please do.
