MVP Final: Karl "Buzz Lightweight" Mann - go on, think about it carefully.
SPIRIT: Bears

Hurricaine presented each team they played with a timed fill-in-the-gaps
competition, with marks awarded for speed, artistic merit and the necessity of
getting at least one answer correct. Druids won a big bag of sweets for their
top ranking 7.5 marks (of a possible 10) and the honour of having their answers
(well, some of them) used as a benchmark for the other scores.

(There's quite a bit after this point...)

Tournament Format:
Round 1: Round-Robin in pools of 4. Competition here is really for second
place in the pool so that you get a shot at the Final. If the top team makes a
mistake, it can recover in Round 2. Games to 18 mins or 13 points.

Pool A: the Fluid Druids and Druids Old Gits (DOG) team their games against
Lurkers and Hurricaine comfortably and no1 slot was up for grabs. The two teams
had been placed in the same pool for this very reason - they couldn't decide
which would be stronger so they thought they'd find out early on. The presence
of Adam's still-recovering knee and some of the lesser seen Old Gits dictated
ZoneD by DOG (which got busted), and the lesser practiced overheads were fair
game for the younger, more mobile Druids. The Druids gained a 3-0 lead. DOG
then changed from Zone to SensibleSwitching for D, and threw more carefully, to
bring the game back on an even keel. Then they waited, when the Druids made the
mistake in the final 30 seconds with the score even, DOG played possession for
25 then threw the win-or-die pass and caught it. With no time remaining, Druids
couldn't recover.

Pool B: Blue Arse Flies discovered that having a large team can be a problem in
the early stages of an Indoor tournament. Playthings lost their first game by
default and Sharks overcame Slow White. The three way tie that resulted was
settled on Goal Difference between the tied teams, Slow White top, then Sharks,
with Playthings relegated to the Plate competition.

Pool C: Zebedees discovered the disadvantages of only having 4 players, but
managed to borrow from SFA, and coming 3rd. Mohawks managed to beat Mr Men to
the top on the merit of their draw being worth more than Mr Men's loss. Bears,
despite drawing with Mohawks, failed to win any other games and finished 4.

Pool D: Finished as seeded, UTI, Skunks, SFA, Funky Nuns.

Round 2: Rather than the more traditional sets of elimination games, Newport
offers the chance of redeeming those earlier mistakes or falling foul of
complacency in the form of another Round-Robin pool. Two pools for the Trophy,
two for the Plate, the objective being to win your pool to be in the final
against the winners of the contemporary pool. Games are still 18 minutes or 13
points. Midway through this round, a Shotgun player was discovered playing
Indoor Ultimate and enjoying it, except maybe for those times when he realised
that being horizontal would soon result in contact with an uncomfortable
surface.

Pool P (Trophy): DOG, Sharks, Mohawks, Skunks. DOG having beaten the Skunks and
Mohawks comfortably (by scoreline), Skunks beat Mohawks, Mohawks beat Sharks
and Sharks beat Skunks in sudden death. Sharks are up to face DOG - if they
win, they're in the Final, if they loose, goal difference with Skunks and
Mohawks puts them in the 5-6 playoff. DOG's experience, switching D and
improved throwing puts DOG into the Final, Skunks 2nd, Mohawks 4th.

Pool Q (Trophy): Druids, Slow White, Mr Men, UTI. Pool of death ? Druids lose
by a point to Mr Men (who had some things to prove) in the last 5 seconds of
the game, Mr Men and Druids both lose to a confident UTI, Slow White, who ended
up in this pool due to Sharks defeat by Playthings in Round 1, beat Mr Men,
then UTI and realise that they're in the Final no matter what their score
against Druids. Druids finally win that game, by a single point, but still
finish bottom of the pool. UTI are 2 and Mr Men 3.

Pool R (Plate): Hurricaine, Playthings, Bears, SFA. Playthings made up for
their Round 1 no-show by winning all their games to be in the Plate Final,
though Bears gave them some trouble (I can't remember if it was sudden death?),
finishing second, SFA 3rd and Hurricaine 4th.

Pool S: Lurkers, Blue Arse Flies, Zebedees, Funky Nuns. Blue Arse Flies
(very lucky that they only lost to Zebedees by 1 point) get to the Plate Final
on Goal Difference with Lurkers and Zebedees, each team with W2 L1 records.
Lurkers finish 2, Zebedees 3 and the Nuns (inspired throwing, outjumping
Merrick, unfazed catching and layout scores) 4th.

And so to the positional games. S4 vs R4, etc. 25 minutes, 15 points.
Hurricaine made use of their huck play against their first opposition of
comparative height, but ran up against the positive cycle of Nuns' increasing
confidence, increased successful D, increasingly successful O and further
bolstered confidence. Both teams finished smiling. Zebedees played ironman 4,
their earlier assistants now playing for the opposition (their own team)- SFA,
and played well, loosing by only 3 points. The tightest games of the
tournament, Lurkers vs Bears who'd both missed the Plate Final by one point,
and the Plate Final itself, Playthings vs Blue Arse Flies, both went to sudden
death, Bears and Playthings respectively emerging the victors. Druids regained
whatever they'd lost in the way of teamwork and beat Mohawks, Mr Men (with Ian
Stebbing proving he's not as fat, slow or daft as he looks) kept their heads
and contained Sharks, and Skunks performed excellently (how do you stop Sonic,
and, when you do, how do you stop the rest as well?) against UTI.

The Final: DOG vs Slow White. Old friends and rivals, under new names. Pete
Hallet is tall, Adam is fat, Sasha likes trying to throw at Pete, Jeff's body
appears to do what his brain tells it without disagreeing so much, Karl really
doesn't stop running, does he? Raffi knows about throwing (though he'd prefer a
little breeze in the air) Dave Beale plays once a year and hasn't lost yet...
and you still haven't a clue what happened. DOG played a lot of Zone, but
played person-on-person (both teams' women were essential to the game) to keep
the variety going, Karl putting enough pressure on Pete to make Slow White
think seriously about how successful the long passes would be. Slow White
responded, showing they have a competent running/zone-breaking game when they
use it and abusing DOG for defensive errors. They also proved they knew the DOG
offensive style by poaching off for the hammers and knives to the EndZone. DOG
persisted, however, to win the game in a confident manner.

I reckon that's enough from me. If anyone's REALLY interested, we'll see if we
can put all the scores on the web page, or somewhere.

Cheers to all for coming. See you next time.
