Dear Frisbee Flingers,

This weekend saw the finals of the student indoor championships in
Leeds, and Fingers were there representing the Midlands (!). First
casualties of the tournament were ?Chaos (I think) who scratched and
Jedi Children (as hosts and 5th place finishers in the Northerns)
replaced them. Second casualty was the car bringing a significant
number of our team and so we played our first game against eventual
finallists Skunks, with only 5 players (one of whom was a member of
our 2nd team who'd just turned up to cheer us on...). Not surprising
then, we lost.

However we can't blame lack of numbers for a lack of success, because
we also managed to lose our next 2 pool games and a Plate QF with a full
compliment of players, losing to OW!, Jedi Kids and Sneeekys (who had
just been edged out of the top half in a sudden death cross-over with
Mythago).

Saturday night was spent at "The Dry Dock" a pub made out of a boat
(not on water), and the Poly Union (those who had the stamina).

Sunday we managed to continue our impressive run of form losing to
Bradford (on a full size pitch with sideline and everything) before
facing a last place showdown with Cranfield's "Alien Nation", the
first time our two clubs had met and with the prize being not only
pride but the wooden spoon. BY this time, we frankly didn't give a
flying f*ck whether we won or lost (except pride of course), and
this was reflected in our game as we relaxed a bit, lost our tension
and finally won, giving us the coveted and prestigious 15th spot.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, hot favourites Catch 22 survived a wobble in
their pool games, almost losing to Jesters, to make the final:
overcoming most teams by their remarkable hucking abilities and
physical presence: where they met and overcame Skunks. In a
sometimes heated final: Catch's commitment to accurate rule calling
collided with most students teams' more relaxed attitude, and caused
some tempers to rise. However ( I think) they were all friends at
the end.

In the lower half, Phat 'Eds (there you go Jez, I've given you a
mention) beat Sneeekys to win the plate; or rather the Storm Trooper
Vase (in another close final)- showing the benefit of having a points
cap as well as a time limit, and Sneeeky's were also the winners of
the Spirit award (good for them!).

As we've now come to expect from the Leeds Ultimate community, the
tournament was conducted very smoothly, with Pete in charge and the
rest of the Jedi's helping out, and throughout the Spirit seemed to
be alive and well.

Here the placings I know of...(hopefully someone will post the full
list later):
1.Catch 22
2.Skunks
3.Mohawks
4.Bears
?
9.Phat'Eds
10.Sneeekys PLUS Spirit
14.Picnic In The Sky
15.Fingers 6
16.Alien Nation

Anyways, now we've lulled everyone into a false sense of security by
finishing 15th, Fingers will be back with a vengeance next week, so
watch out Edinburgh- here we come!

Love and Luck,

Lawrence PAULSON.
