OK, I give in, I'll write something in the absence of any juniors =
emailing. So much for empowering the youth of today.

February 15/16 saw the third National Junior Indoors. Hosted at =
Millfield school (location for this year's European Championships), 13 =
junior teams took part and an 'Old Gits' team was quickly formed to make =
up the numbers to form two pools of seven.

Tournament Director Vaughan Williams had done a brilliant job in =
planning the event, and handled the obligatory 'problems' extremely =
well. First glitch was that the Tennis velodrome that had been built had =
a concrete floor, laid that week. Most people who play indoor Ultimate =
would refuse to even go onto a concrete pitch, but it was surprisingly =
good. OK, so only a couple of idiots laid out, but the pitch was the =
full 40 x 20 Metre size with no walls anywhere near the pitch. The grip =
was perfect for cuts (in both senses of the word).

Then came the problem with shoe soles. It doesn't matter if Nike, Hi =
Tec, Adidas, etc. have spent x million pounds developing non-marking =
black soles; if they are black, you can't wear them on the pitch. Bone =
(Cavendish school) had to have all of their games rescheduled to the =
other hall, as three of their players had black soles. Ironically, it =
was the light soled shoes that left more marks on their new surface. By =
the end of the first day, we had been banned from using the velodrome. =
Thank God Millfield school has three sports halls, so the 'chuck around' =
hall now became the second hall. It didn't affect the schedule much, as =
the top 8 teams had already decided to play the knockout matches in the =
'proper surface' hall.=20

The only other hiccup with the weekend was that Hint of Lime had entered =
two even teams, but had been seeded as if they were a first and a second =
team. That caused a few upsets, and resulted in the top two seeds being =
knocked out at the quarter final stage.

Following the opening pool matches, Hint of Lemon, Discult, Nads and =
Hurricanes from Blue pool, and Blue Arse Flies, Hint of Lime, Muts and =
Bone from Red pool went into the top 8, leaving Dane Raiders, Tattva, =
Low Flying Children, Flowering Garden, Dump Frenzy and Terrestrials (Old =
Gits) in the plate.

Major upsets in the quarter finals as Muts (Millfield) convincingly put =
out Discult (both playing iron person). Hint of Lime went out to Nads, =
Blue Arse Flies beat Bone, and Hint of Lemon disposed of Bone. The semis =
were close, but Blue Arse Flies and Hint of Lemon both came through to =
meet in the final.

The final was a very close affair, with very few mistakes from either =
team. Lemon started to get more interceptions, and pulled away to win by =
5 or so (sorry, I can't remember any of the scores). Both of these teams =
have some very talented players, and will be worrying a lot of open =
teams at future tournaments. There wasn't an MVP award, but I would have =
certainly voted for Alex from Lemon who has only been playing for 6 =
months, and is definitely made from the Nick Haslem mold.

Lower down, Discult beat Lime in the 5/6 playoff (Caroline was not =
impressed when she found herself chasing the disc when Discult, still =
iron person, pulled a zone D), and in the plate, Flowering Garden beat a =
rapidly improving Dump Frenzy.=20

Overall, the standard has greatly improved, which is surprising in a =
year that didn't have Oxy 7, Lemmings, or Gooie playing. Spirit was =
always good, and their knowledge and abidance of the rules has also =
improved (something junior teams often get criticised for). One reason =
for the improvement is that more Ultimate players are getting involved =
in coaching junior teams.=20

There was, as usual, a demonstration game between GB Juniors and the =
Coaches. Same old story, Coaches take a nice lead, then get tired and =
start moaning that they're getting too old for this. Juniors won 10-6 =
with Sammy (13 years old) scoring the most points for the juniors. Nice =
point block by Chris on Patch hasn't improved his chances of captaining =
GB Juniors at the Worlds next year.

Many thanks to Vaughan and all the people who helped to run this =
tournament. The facilities were excellent, and there really was very =
little that could have been improved upon. Next up is the National =
Junior Outdoors to be hosted by Hint of Lime in Gosport on May 3rd and =
4th. Invites will be going in the next fortnight.

Kevin.
