Birmingham Indoors 1999

This weekend saw 21 ulitmate teams descend on Birmingham for the first =
Ultimate tournament the city has seen, and it all went along pretty =
well.

The Saturday began early with 17 minute pool games kicking off at =
9:15am. A particular highlight was a tough first game for Latte losing =
by a point to Look at Me. Pool C proved to be a bit of a surprise with =
tight games all round resulting in a three way tie for top spot. Head to =
head results not resolving it, points difference had to be used and =
Slipdisc came out on top allowing them to automatically qualify for =
Sundays top 8 along with BAF 1, Mexican horse Bandits and Look at Me.

Late Sat afternoon saw the crossover games with teams placed 2nd and 3rd =
in the pools playing for places in the top or middle 8, and the 4th and =
5th placed teams playing for positions in the middle 8 and bottom 5. =
Phat eds 1, strangeways, hammerage and Team latte all proceeded into the =
top 8. Games to decide bottom 5 or middle 8 were hotly contested and =
surprisingly saw phat eds 2 conquer JOW and a much improved BAF 2 =
conquering WAS.

As Sat drew to a close the party loomed. Taking place in the basement of =
the Farce and Firkin it kicked off with phat tunes from the live DJs and =
Look at Me set a frantic drinking pace with drinking games galore. As =
the evening heated up and the atmosphere evolved the younger members of =
Up 4 Grabs showed everyone how to really party delighting the crowds =
with some top break dancing moves.

Sunday began at 9:00am with the quarter finals of the middle 8, Angels, =
Whiplash and Bears 2 all progressed towards the plate, in the fourth =
quarter finals Up 4 Grabs managed to pull of an upset by beating Bears 1 =
7 to 5 and join the others in the plate semi's. Then came the top 8 =
quarters and games were won as expected by BAF 1, Mexican Horse Bandits, =
Team latte and Look at me (with sore heads and only after just beating =
strangeways by a point). The first of the bottom 5 round robin league =
games were then played seeing Brunel and Sub Pats battling it out with =
Sub Pats just edging it and taking their first victory of the =
tournament. The rest of the Sunday morning saw Up 4 Grabs continue their =
winning streak and impressively progress to the plate final along with =
Bears 2.=20

At Midday the hall was converted into a single pitch and a spectator =
gallery was erected providing a stadium style atmosphere for the top 4 =
semis and the place play offs. The first match was a top of the table =
semi clash between the unbeaten Mexican Horse Bandits and Team Latte. =
Latte came out firing and managed to grab a couple of points lead, =
however the iron man team of the bandits fought back hard to bring the =
score back to evens. Despite this effort the large pitch proved to much =
for the bandits and Latte managed to edge ahead again and take the match =
and proceed to the final. The other semi was more clear cut with BAF =
decisively beating Look at Me to progress. Next came the conclusion to =
the bottom 5 league with JOW and WAS both unbeaten and playing of for =
the Silver Spoon. Despite a big effort WAS couldn't overcome JOWs =
superior disc skills, and organisation brought by Charlie Mead who they =
had picked up for the weekend. All the remaining place play offs proved =
to be tight games, with all the teams really enjoying the extra room the =
big pitch offered.

The Plate final was a hard fought affair with Bears trying their =
hardest, but they were just unable to stop the winning streak of Up 4 =
Grabs who clinched it with a grab in the zone on the buzzer to win 6-5. =
The final saw BAF line up against Team Latte for a 30 minute + 2 point =
cap epic. BAF began strong and capitalised on turnovers pulling away =
slightly. Team Latte continued to fight for it but BAF maintained their =
composure. Great grabs all round from both teams ensured the crowd =
enjoyed every minute and the crowd showed their appreciation with many =
mexican waves. The two point cap was brought in at 15-12 to BAF. Latte =
dug deep and brought it back to 15-14 however BAF then turned it on and =
took the two points they needed to finish the game and win the cup at =
17-14.=20

Everyone who I spoke to said they really enjoyed it, and the tournament =
raised about =A3700 for charity which was a great effort. All the teams =
involved made it fantastic and the games were played with great spirit. =
The spirit prize went to WAS an ex warwick recreational team just formed =
for the tournament. Respect must also go to Uriel who despite not =
winning a game all tournament maintained a great spirit and a continual =
party attitude.

Thanks to everyone for coming, I enjoyed it despite some technical =
hitches and having to use more tipex than i bargained for. Thanks to =
everyone who helped out and maybe see you all again next year!?

Archie
