I didn't really want to get involved in this, but there are some points that
I wanted to see raised - seems I will be the one to raise them.

1 - Goaltimate is easier for people to identify with because there is a
goal. As Jaimie so rightly pointed out (whilst missing the point ;-) )
Football is the biggest sport in the world - people can readily identify
with something that is similar (see the ratings of things like field hockey
and water polo when the UK is competing as opposed to the World Bowl
(american football))

2 - There is a large sponsorship effort for goaltimate by one person, who
promotes it massively IN THE USA - ESPN is a US oriented TV Station (its in
it's charter IIRC), which broadcasts around the world - much like Fox Sports
(Sky sports to those in the UK)

3 - There is a parrallel which can be drawn between the following sports:
Women's Football
Field Hockey
Ultimate

Women's football in the US was not seen very widely in comparison to Men's
Football at all - since the US won the women's world cup, you can hardly
escape it - people like Brandy Chastain are now multi-million endorsement
opportunities.

In Field Hockey, it took Shaun Kerly et al. to springboard the sport to the
screen (and even now that we haven't won anything like the Olympics since,
it is fading into nothingness)

Following this logic (dubious to say the least ;-) ) we need to win the
Worlds and or World Clubs, to get TV sponsorship...... Remember that the
finals can sometimes be seen (albeit on Channel 4 that well known Sprot
channel.)

Cads - tired, hungry and at work WAY too early.
