surely the whole debate boils down to - do we want to retain the game we all
love - but see it remain the preserve of a few enlightened souls or do we
try and make it large, corporate, financially-driven and visible to loads of
people by the medium of TV.

If you want the former - NO REFS, but the game grows slowly!!

if you want the latter - you will need at least as many refs (or line
observers) as american football, because so much action happens off the
disc, but you get media coverage, more people start playing, it gains an
element of respectablility.

look at C4's worlds '95 coverage. Even with that huge overhead crane
camera what did they cover - the guy with the disc, and the guy making a
successful cut. The other 5 players were ignored, even though they might
have been a vital part of the play.

To be brutally honest, professional though it was (I could STILL do
without the shot of adam's knackers), it in no way conveyed the speed and
sheer energy of the game as I remember seeing it live.

Most of us have seen top level games, a few have even played in top
level games, and all of us have memories of games ruined by bullshit calls,
bad spirit, bad attitudes. It was such a pleasure to see this years world
final played with spirit and determination. However there was still one BS
call made by the Americans, but it was the only one made in the whole game
IIRC. It was nowhere near as bad as Redlights vs WSL (or, even worse anyone
remember UTI vs Catch22 semi final Birmingham 1997?). It was the old joke "I
went to a fight, and a game of Ultimate broke out". I just have a nasty
feeling if money and TV coverage is introduced, the egos will land and
spirit will drop as the desire to win increases. Then observers will become
a necessity, IMHO.

you have to decide what do you want, and then the best way to get there.
Unfortunately, I don't think that there are many compromises.
