Will Parker award for most improved team: Skunks

The venue for the nationals was absolutely perfect with two sports
halls in the same sports centre giving two large pitches to play all
the games. Unfortunately for OW!, their bad luck in reaching
tournaments continued as they crucially missed their first two
games and finally had a full squad three points into their third
match. By this time it was already too late to reach the top eight
and they were left with only the plate to concentrate on.

The biggest shock of the group matches was the first defeat in two
years for Bears. They lost by one point to Ro Sham Bo, who were
clearly much stronger than there no. 12 seed suggested. Bears
continued to play far below potential for the rest of the day and
sneaked through their group in second position. No Frills and
Strange Blue both captilised on Northern Champions Flatball
Project weakened team from that which won their regionals to both
reach the quarter final stage. The highly competitive group brought
only close defeats in all the matches and both Mohawks and Uriel
were very unlucky not progress.

In the second group of eight, much fancied Skunks lost to Far
Flung early on. Both teams traded for much of the match but Far
Flung pulled away late on to win. After convincing victories in early
matches the potential group decider of Phat 'Eds and Far Flung
was played out in the main sports hall. Far Flung always seemed
to be in control in a very tight match, but with two minutes left Phat
'Eds were down 5-3. A quick score and turn over left a one point
deficit with a minute left, unfortunately an inexplicable drop in the
zone seemed to have lost the match for sheffield. But in a
dramatic finish Phat 'Eds got a big D and then scored in the dying
seconds. 5-5 in a match played with great spirit.

Phat 'Eds only needed only to beat skunks now to win the group
and did so comfortably 6-2, to leave Far Flung second only on goal
difference. Mythago came through as the fourth placed team in the
group.

Thanks to a welsh rugby victory the union was a safe place to have
the party, and it was Jedi who seemed to be making most of the
noise at the bar.

A ten o'clock start saw comfortable quarter final victories for Ro
Sham Bo and Phat 'eds, but the other two both went to sudden
death. First No Frills and Far Flung had a match in which the lead
swung either way and was nail biting to the death. At 7-7 and into
the cap a blade into the zone was at first fumbled then recaught by
Stu from No Frills, unfortunately he appeared to straddle the back
of the zone indoing so and the disk was sent back. The scots
turned them over and Far Flung scored at the other end, despite
the brilliant home crowd support. Bears only sneaked through 7-6
against skunks, after leading 6-4 with a couple of minutes to go,
but in the pressure of sudden death they held their nerve.

Both the semi finals were over before they started as Ro Sham Bo
and Bears led from early on and never surrendered their
advantages. Bears were now playing nearer the standard they had
been expected to play at, and the final was eagerly anticipated.

Unfortunately for the neutrals in the crowd the final was never
close. In fact, after about twenty minutes Bears led 12-0 and there
were chants of 'Bagel' and ironic cheers every time a Bear caught
the disk. Ro Sham Bo simply could not break down the Bears
defence, and although they rallied late on they lost a convincing 14-
5.

Challis was made MVP after making numerous block in the final,
and the new faces of Jedi recieved the spirit award.

A big thanks to all those who attended, Si and Stu from No Frills
for organising the tournament, and Si Weeks for writing the
schedule.

BUT remember 5 Aside Doesn't Count
See you outdoors
