The BUF tour (as developed by Si Hill) was introduced in an attempt to satisfy the desire for the top teams to compete at a high level without excluding the other thirty or so teams that play regular Ultimate in this country. It works differently from all other 'open' tournaments, where the top seed in each pool spend the majority of Saturday playing pointless games, in which other than possibly one, they know that they will comfortably beat the opposition, and vice versa for the bottom seeds.

In the Tour teams start in 'peer' pools, where teams compete against opposition of similar quality, split into groups of eight - two pools of four in each group, 1-8, 9-16, 17-24, etc. This presents some meaningful competition on Saturday for all teams. The theory being that by playing against opposition of similar quality, this will allow teams to improve through close competition, and also enjoy themselves more by removing the pointless games. Sunday allows the teams to either challenge the group above them, or defend against upcoming teams. The top four teams of each group then challenge the bottom four teams of the group above them, which allows improving teams to climb the rankings.

Who decides which group your team is placed in? That is decided by your finishing position from the event before, so you can progress over a period of time.

Last year, UTI won the Tour (and the Ben Rainbow trophy), by beating Catch 22 into second place in the last game of the last event of the series. They went on to win Nationals as well, but despite their apparent dominance, they were beaten into third place at the first event by being beaten in the semi's by Chevron Action Flash, who then lost to Catch 22 in the final of Tour 1. The Tour tests a teams' ability to compete at a high level and win over a period of time. But it also caters for the teams at the other end, who can enjoy themselves, by pitching them against like minded teams, who enjoy the less competitive side of ultimate. 42 teams entered the tour last year, including some school teams, so there is no reason why you can't join a team or enter one yourself. If you are on the BUF mailing list details will arrive on your doorstep soon.

Can anyone send me more details as to how the "Tour" works. As I have
only recently started the Ultimate thing, I know nothing about them. Is
it something I could participate in, or just go along and watch some
great Ultimate being played?
