Midlands Regionals (from the perspective of Strange Blue)

Thank you Merrick for hosting a fantastic tournament in Cheltenham this
past weekend. The venue had two pitches (with a very useful waist-high wall
on one side), a great viewing stand, cafeteria and gorgeous hot showers in
the swimming pool area.

And to top it all off we all stayed in a hotel(!!) which was within walking
distance by the famous racecourse and included a full English breakfast, a
great start to Sunday.

I am afraid I do not know the total results of the tournament because we
were concentrating on trying to qualify but I shall do my best. The top 6
go to Edinburgh.

1. Red
2. STAN
3. Blue Arse Flies I
4. Bears I
5. Strange Blue
6. Superfly
-------------
7. Twin Peaks (Plate)
8. Blue Arse Flies II
9. Mad Kows
10. Bears II
11. Funky Nuns (Spirit)
(9th and 10th could be reversed)

Two teams had unfortunately dropped out at the last minute (Bears III and
Jesters) but that meant there was plenty of opportunity to play pickup
games.

The great thing about this tournament was that there was plenty of playing
time. Strange Blue played 9 games (5 of 23 minutes and 4 of 27 minutes) and
won 8 of them!!! We only lost to Stan and that game was 12-9. So why were
we only 5th you may ask? Well with 11 teams it was difficult to decide on
the crossovers on the second day. We drew STAN and had a fantastic game
trading points. In the end their experience got the better of us.
Ironically it worked out that despite us beating Bears I they ended up
above us yet again. Revenge! :)

The final between Red and Stan was very exciting. They traded points with
Stan being slightly ahead all the way along. It was evens by the buzzer,
and stayed that way through 2 minutes of overtime. Red then made the
crucial D and tight score in sudden death. I saw a video still of the final
point (courtesy of a Mad Kow) and there was Duncan, back foot in the end
zone front foot out and above the ground and disc in hand. Fantastic shot.
Scott to Duncan streaking to the forehand corner was the key scoring
strategy they used to equalize the game 2 or 3 times. A great, intense
match to watch.

Cheers to the Blue Arse Flies for one of the best tournaments I have been
to. I am sure they have the full scores as we were required to write them
down on forms and a member of each team had to sign them. I know Merrick is
not on email. Does any Blue Arse Fly have the full scores and can put them
on britdisc?
