Swindon worked, and everybody seemed to have a good time, but it could have been much improved. And you can quote me on that!

We were lucky with the pitches - the moles didn't wreak havoc (they have in the past!), it stopped raining and the grass was about the right length (we've had a mud-bath on several pitches in the past), and for the first time EVER the groundsmen managed to get the pitches the right size.

4 pitch features that seem to be really simple criteria, but astoundingly difficult to control and you're only really going to find out about on the day.
Even past experience doesn't always provide useful expectations (anyone else remember the year that Southampton was bone dry 'cos the hot spell hit unexpectedly?)

The schedule was really somewhat uncomfortable - trying to let everybody play (especially in the first Tour), with an Open format (where might DSM be otherwise?) and ending up with 33 teams meant that there was a pool of 5. This placed restrictions on playing times across the whole event, and was probably quite hard work for the teams at the bottom of this pool.

And the social aspect... we were so lucky it stopped raining! It gave the chance to chill out and watch other games during the day, and was quite conducive to the "beers around the campfire" scenario that ensued in the campsite (which we only just managed to get permission to use) on Saturday night. The pubs down the road looked too small and too busy (though maybe that was 'cos the sun came out) to be able to cope with a mass ingress of ultimate players, especially if we wanted to hang out together.

Some venues have the capability to host 32 (or more?)teams. These venues are, unfortunately, few and far between, jealously guarded, or undiscovered.

If you've discovered one, and are interested in using it for a Tour event, I'd recommend bidding for the EARLY events - assuming that some kind of segregation does occur, but there's a feeling that we ought to make the first Tour as open as possible (how/where do you seed 4 previously unheard of teams potential?) we'll need as big a venue as possible such an event.

If you've got a smaller venue, bid for whenever you like (!)

For all bids, it'd be real handy if you have more than one available weekend at your venue (ideally you'd be able to bid for more than one event!)... in the past, as the bids have come in, the Tour has been rearranged slightly to try to even out travel times and attendence and suchlike.

PS: There WAS (Ben, is there still?) a "How to run a tournament" guide on the BUF Website. The AFDA site also has some useful info. The Ultimate Handbook might have...
