Never easy to judge.

The only solid figure is that there were 600 people on this years Tour
roster.

Given that there are around other 100 non-tour teams out there (some more
active than others and some more distinct than others) I would think its
fair to say that there are another 1000 people who play at least
occasionally.

Should you count all the new recruits at university freshers fairs? 50 uni
teams x around 50 new recruits per team = 2500 new players but how many
stay?
