This weekend saw 14 teams compete in the National Junior Indoors in
Grantham. This event hadn't happened for the last couple of years due to a
lack of junior teams, but that has thankfully changed, and most juniors
competing were playing in their first tournament. With 13 junior teams (and
one Old Gits / Giffers team), this event equalled junior nationals of 97 as
being the largest junior event seen in the UK. Apologies if any of the
information is wrong, especially the final placings. This is all from
memory, and there may be an official report coming from the organisers
later.

The tournament was hosted by Grantham College and brilliantly run by Paul
Unwin and his students (Dave, Kim, Sammy, Rob et al). The pitches were a
touch on the small side once the hall had been divided into two courts, but
teams soon adjusted and preferred to have far more games than would have
been possible on a single large court.

The teams were split into two pools of 7 to play Round Robin. Pool A saw
Thundercats and Kamaya maya (alias GBH) dominating, with Kamaya winning the
rather heated head-to-head 7-5 to top the pool. KFC were the only team to
not win a pool game and headed straight for the plate.

Pool B saw Muppet Babies and St. Peters draw their opening head-to-head
game, and then both won all their remaining games. St. Peters ended top on
goal difference. Old Gits lost all their games by default, but did beat
every team in the pool and felt very old and tired against the top two
teams.

Cross-over games between the two pools to decide who made the top 8 all went
according to seedings, but with El Niņo just losing out, Whoosh 1 and Mange
Tout celebrating making the top 8.

Saturday night was spent celebrating Stig's birthday, playing pool, table
football, hack volleyball, crab football, dancing, and everything else that
you associate with Ultimate, but with a little less alcohol.

On Sunday, the bottom 6 consisted of St. Peters 2, Whoosh 2, KFC, Giffers,
El Niņo and Hint of Lemon. These teams played Round Robin on the Sunday
having carried through their Saturday results. Hint of Lemon and El Niņo met
knowing that whoever won would win the plate, and having started very close,
El Niņo pulled ahead to win. It's worth noting that all five junior teams in
the plate were co-ed, with girls often out-numbering the boys on pitch.

Whoosh 2 and KFC met knowing that the loser would walk away with the spoon,
and with Whoosh down to just 4 players (and none of them injury-free), they
offered to concede the game. Following some frantic persuasions from various
coaches and spirit from KFC, they agreed to play 5 on 4. Whoosh proceed to
learn a zone in about 30 seconds, and after some frantic play, pull away to
win 13-3. A bit tough on KFC but they are very young, and a great prospect
for the future.

As for the top 8, Sunday morning saw the quarter finals. Due to a
communication cock-up, Thundercats due on court at 9 were still waiting for
a lift, upsetting the schedule. Banbars decided to concede their quarter
against Muppets feeling that they wouldn't win, and thus helping to get the
schedule back on course. Muppets reluctantly accepted the win, but really
would have preferred to play (such naivety is sweet). Great spirit from both
teams though.

Top two teams from both pools go through to the semis largely untroubled. In
the first semi, St. Peters 1 met Thundercats. Thundercats had been very
impressive at reaching this stage, and looked like they could run out easy
winners, but St. Peters shocked them and soon had a 4 point lead. Both teams
suffered a bit from not looking where the outside lines were, both when
catching, and when marking. Calls were spirited though, and the crowd often
asked for its opinion (and rightly ignored sometimes). As time ran out,
Thundercats had drawn level and we entered sudden death. St. Peters had
three opportunities to score but squandered them all with throw aways, and
Thundercats celebrated.

In the other semi, Kamaya maya built up a massive lead of 10-2 over Muppets
before they got their act together. Final score was 10-5, but Muppets knew
they had been out-played having failed to shut down Raj and Mike.

Before the final was an exhibition match, where each team nominated one of
their players to play. Muppets somehow managed to sneak on a couple more of
its players, but their arrogance and skill made a better spectacle, with the
opening point of dump, hammer, layout score being fairly typical.

So to the final, with both teams psyched up. 30 minutes on the clock, and
Kamaya maya having played all weekend without any subs. Rory Underwood was
there to watch the final and to present the prizes, and he seemed fairly
impressed with the level of play (he'd previously seen Ultimate on Sky). Any
chance of a repeat of the not so spirited first meeting of these two teams
was quickly diffused when Thundercats score first but their player landing
on the sideline. After a brief discussion, Raj concedes the point, and both
teams relax into a very spirited final.

Kamaya built an early lead of a couple of points, and then traded
throughout, not being phased by the bigger pitch or the lack of subs. Final
score was (I believe) 12-8 to Kamaya maya.

Spirit ended up being extremely close with 5 teams receiving 2 votes, but
eventual winners were El Niņo.

There were the inevitable injuries, with three casualty runs, each time for
badly sprained ankles that needed x-rays.

Overall, it was a great tournament, with so many new teams, and so much
promise for the future. Let's see how many attend the junior outdoors.
