All,

I notice that a large percentage of these people are from just a couple of
teams, and I also note that there is no provision to prevent the whole
committee to be from one team. I would suggest that in the future the
constitution be amended to ensure some measure of diversity (and that people
should keep this in mind during the current election).

Just doing my bit for democracy

Subject: UK Ultimate Election & Candidates

Dear all,

In this email:-

1. List of candidates
2. Postponement of election
3. Registration opportunity extended

1. The list of all 15 candidates is attached at the bottom of this email.
Feel free to contact them directly or question them on Britdisc. If you are
not on Britdisc visit www.ukultimate.com/informed.asp for susbscription
instructions.

2. Due to a delay in getting Ultimatum magazine printed we will postpone the
deadline for voting to Friday 9th of November. The planned meeting at
Cheltenham has also been postponed. Ultimatum plus the voting form should
not arrive the in middle of next week.

3. The postponement of the election gives more time for players to register.
So far we have had 472 people register but there are a lot more people out
there. Please spread the word amongst your team mates. Final deadline is
Friday (26th Oct).

Thanks

Ben Ravilious
Caretaker Secretary
UK Ultimate

LIST OF CANDIDATES:-

Adam Batchelor (Without Portfolio) adam.batchelor@virgin.net
Managing Director and owner of The Raceway Group (Indoor Karting Centres)
employing 60+ staff opened in 1993. Chairman of the National Kartin
Association the governing body of pro karting and sit on the Motor
Activities Training Council and the HSE Joint Advisory Committee for
Karting. Started playing Ultimate in 1981 with the then worst team in the
country which is now called Fluid Druids. I held the equivalent post of
Director of Competitions for the BUF for 3 years in the mid 80's, have
played for GB and captained GB in Japan in 1992. I am passionate about the
sport and care about how we further develop the sport. Because of my
extensive business interests and experience I believe I can bring a
different perspective to the group.

Anna Winter (Without Portfolio) eng9aw@leeds.ac.uk 0113 2422351
I've been playing for a little over two years with Jedi and Disco Inferno,
the Leeds University teams, and have recently started a regional student
women's team for the North. Compared to most of the candidates putting
themselves forward I am comparatively new to the game and the organising of
it. This means I bring a fresh outlook to the group and provide a voice for
others who are learning more about our sport. In addition to this I
represent student interests as well as those of women players and so can
offer a variety of perspectives.

Barry O'Kane (Without Portfolio) barry@endzone.co.uk 07763 070196
I've been heavily involved in Ultimate locally and nationally over the last
nine years and would like to bring that experience to the board of our new
association. As well as being committed to the general development of our
sport I particularly want to:

? Represent more remote communities of players e.g. those in Scotland.
? Develop ways to help and support those who coach teams of all levels,
without changing our unique culture.
? Continue to develop our online resources e.g. my www.whatisultimate.com
site.

There's loads I can bring to UK Ultimate, besides, we need to ensure a
sensible quota of beards in the board!

Ben Mitchell (Without Portfolio) b.mitchell@lmu.ac.uk
I have a wide experience of Ultimate, including at the top level of the
Tour, Mixed Tour, indoors, international events, coaching and running a
student club. I am pragmatic and a good listener. I have regular contact
with a large number of committed Ultimate players whose ideas and opinions I
am keen to represent. I'm a big sports fan and I believe that Ultimate is a
great sport at all levels. I would like UK Ultimate to develop for all of
its members and not to alienate any part of our community

Ben Ravilious (President or Without Portfolio) ben@ravilious.net 07703
460866
As the chief architect of UK Ultimate I would like the opportunity to steer
it in its first year. A website developer by profession, I have held the
position of BUF Secretary for the past three years. I play for Red in
Leicester and have experience of running and publicising our club as well as
coaching the Thundercats junior team. I want the board of directors to work
as a team to run the sport in a more professional manner. I want all levels
of ultimate to be nurtured and would like to concentrate on getting many
more people playing the sport.

Chris Hughes (Without Portfolio) cjhughes@talk21.com
Most ultimate players will be aware that I have been Director of
Competitions for the last three years, and whilst I have retired from that
post I still feel that have more to offer Ultimate in this country (and
probably more off field than on). I feel that my experience as DoC has given
me insight into the parts of organising the sport that this country does so
well, but also what is still poor, and so can be improved. I want to work
towards a greater consistency between the different divisions of Ultimate as
run by the association, so that the official events are better organised, of
a higher standard, and an example of what Ultimate can achieve. I feel that
with the open division, now leading the way in organisation and quality of
tournaments, these lessons can be passed on to the Mixed and Women's
division, hopefully resulting in the rapid expansion of those divisions,
like the open.

Ian Stebbing (Without Portfolio) ian.stebbing@uk.pwcglobal.com
Current treasurer of the BUF, having held the position for 2 years. Involved
in many levels of ultimate throughout a 15 year career as a player with a
number of teams including playing for the National team in the Open and
Masters divisions, and running a number of major tournaments, including this
year's National Outdoors. I have been involved in setting up UK Ultimate and
would like to see it develop further to provide improved tournaments, level
of playing and enjoyment for all those involved in playing in the UK.

Kev Lowe (Without Portfolio) Kev@cheerful.com
Having served on the BUF Executive since 1993 as Youth Coordinator, I still
feel I have much to offer. Ultimate in the UK should be so much bigger, and
the only real way to grow is to promote Ultimate in schools. It has so much
to offer young people and it's such a shame that we've never had the
opportunity to really publicise Ultimate. I believe there should be more
people elected who have an active interest in junior Ultimate, as they are
the future of our sport. I will also continue to fight for tournaments to be
cheap and accessible to everyone, particularly juniors and students.

Laura Pearce (Secretary or Without Portfolio) laurapearce@btinternet.com
020 86422302
I have been involved with the sport's organisation since 1998 in my role as
National Director of the BUF, and I would like to continue my involvement in
the new association, but with a different emphasis. I would like to be more
involved with the communication within the association and between divisions
(open, mixed, womens, masters, students, juniors). I think female
representation on the Board is necessary to keep the interests of women's
and mixed ultimate up there with those of open teams and players. I am
already involved in the development of female players by running localised
practice sessions and I hope to build on this and get more practices for
women happening to improve confidence and skills irrespective of the
division in which they wish to play.

Paul Ruff (Without Portfolio) PaulRuff@Hotmail.com 01392 204764
I have been teaching Ultimate to children (11-16) for the last five years.
My job as a teacher of Physical Education allows me the opportunity to
introduce this sport to literally hundreds of children per year, both in
curriculum time and through our school club. I believe that if we want
Ultimate in this country to expand and go forward, we must get this sport
played is as many schools as we can. This, I am sure would also contribute
significantly to a dramatic rise in standards in years to come. I would
relish the opportunity to get more school children involved in Ultimate.
Primary and Secondary schemes of work would need to be produced. Schools
would need starter packs, access to cheap discs, advertising posters,
opportunities for staff training, and most of all support. This may seem a
little idealistic to some, but I'd like to give it a go and to start
investing heavily in the future of this beautiful sport.

Pete Harvey (Without Portfolio) harvey@backspin.co.uk
I am Peter H Harvey aka Harv, a web guy aged 28, and have enjoyed playing
ulti since '88. I love playing ulti (and pretty much all disc sports) and
love being a part of a very special worldwide community. It's time for me to
give some love back, and I see this as my opportunity. I currently play
with, and help to run, Clapham Ultimate. Clapham are a 'proper' geo club
formed to last beyond the usual scope of 'the next big thing' which has been
a feature of many teams through the years. My aims are:-
1. Bring the spirit back into UK ultimate - Spirit is why we play the game!
2. Assist the UK Ultimate Association with web, branding, merchandising and
PR.
3. Rationalise National Team selection
4. Setup a long term project to build an official library of useful,
ultimate-related material.
5. Write a UK Ultimate Association 'code of conduct'.
6. Encourage & welcome new and travelling players
7. Promotion of all Disc Sports.
Play hard, play to win, but play fair. We are ALL referees. Play to the
spirit of the game. Vote Harv.

Rob Mitchell (Without Portfolio) rob.mitchell@man.ac.uk
I started playing in 1993, helping to found Fingers 6, Manchester's first
Ultimate team. For the last six years i've been in the front carriage of the
Chevron Action Flash rollercoaster, as well as playing GB Open (97,98) and
Mixed (2000). In my spare, spare time I write for the Big Issue. In my
spare, spare, spare time I'd like to use this and other God-given talents to
help UK Ultimate. Principal reasons for standing:

1. Every team needs a dump.
2. Petty roster objections and tournament rule changes represent Chevron's
best chance of winning anything.
3. Annual dinner in Leicester.

Simon Weeks (Director of Competitions or Without Portfolio)
For those of you who don't know me I have been playing ultimate for over six
years and currently play with Chevron Action Flash. During this time I have
organised numerous tournaments including tour events and co-ed nationals. I
have also represented the BUF as national student co-ordinator. I intend to
build on the excellent work already undertaken by Chris Hughes, but I
believe it is too large a task for one person. If elected, I intend to
appoint individuals to oversee each area of competition. Dividing the
workload will aid the smooth running of competitions.

Tom Styles (Without Portfolio) tstyles@protocol.co.uk
Since the beginning of 2001 I, along with (Block Stack Productions), have
tried to make ultimate more accessible through filming three tournaments and
selling the videos. I am also working with "Above and Beyond" the video
makers from the USA, to act as their UK Distributors. I have built a new
website www.block-stack.co.uk which will act as a focus for more in-depth
discussion of the game. (Complementing BritDisc) As well as a channel of
offers of accommodation and transport, which clog up the email list. I've
played with 5 different teams both indoor and outdoor. I'd love to have an
opportunity to push the game forward through my involvement with UK
Ultimate.

Wayne Davey (Treasurer or Without Portfolio) wdavey@ingenta.com 01225
462212
I've been playing ultimate in the UK for 16 years with a variety of teams
(most recently Headrush, UTI & GB Masters). I am a qualified (and
experienced) accountant and always assumed that these "skills" would be used
simply to pay for my ultimate travels. I think you will be able to trust me
to manage the finances of the new organization, and I will always aim to be
approachable. The creation of the association will bring several financial
challenges such as collecting membership fees and evaluating how to best use
our income. I will try to deal sensibly with these issues. Please give me
the opportunity to give up my remaining free time!
