Hi all
Yet again we are faced with the dilemma/issue of women who play on open
teams but wanting to play women's as well.
There is a famous saying that goes something along the lines of you
can't please all the people all of the time and I think this sums up
this situation perfectly.
While some women may be in the position of having a place on an open
team which plays in the tour, I would hazard a guess that the majority
don't.
Unfortunately, it comes down to making a personal choice.
There are arguments for both sides - as Rebecca said having women's
events alongside open events helps to raise the profile of women's
ultimate - how many players know who won the two women's nationals last
year and have some idea of who were in the teams? - and as Ruth said it
is hard to decide between the two, when you are part of an open team and
also want to play women's ultimate too.
Nicole's suggestion of some kind of compromise seems to be the way
forward, but if there are enough women to make an event alongside an
open tour viable, then they shouldn't lose out either.
The key point to be made is that this is something for the female
players themselves to think about and discuss in order to try and find
the solution which results in pleasing as many of the people as much of
the time as possible.

This leads me nicely onto my next point.
At the women's tournament in Nottingham in December, a short meeting was
held after the final, and one of the ideas was to set up a mailing list
for the female players in the UK, where they could discuss relevant
issues and keep up to date with what is happening re practices and
tournaments (I must stress for both women's and mixed ultimate).
I have set up a mailing list for the female players of the UK to join
(its a yahoogroups one).

If you would like to subscribe, then send an email to
ukuw-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

If you have any queries/problems, then send me an email and I'll
endeavour to answer them.
Please forward this on to any players who may not be on britdisc and
even if a whole team can't subscribe, try and get at least one person
to, just so the team knows what's going on.
The only way to solve the dilemmas faced by female players is to work
them out ourselves, and I hope this mailing list will provide a starting
point.
Thanks
Laura Pearce
