Last weekend saw 18 student team congragate in Southampton for the 1997
BUF National Student outdoors. The weather decided not to be too
friendly on the Saturday with frequent drizzel and light but gusty
winds, however Sunday everything changed and there was nothing but
glorious sunshine.

The top 4 seeds all came top of thier pools, with only one unexpected
results occuring lower down in the pools, Bears dropping from 6th to
14th.

Mythago drew the short straw and played Catch 22 for their Semi final on
Sunday, losing 17-10.
The second Semi saw Skunks 1 and Mohawks battle things out,
Skunks got a bad scare early on as the Mohawks took a quick 3-0 lead.
After a quick tactical rethink the Skunks pulled back and took the lead.
In the end SKunks held onto the lead to win 12-9 or 12-10. All in all it
was an excellent game.

3rd 4th play off seemed a formality when Mythago took a 6 point lead,
then things went wrong and Mohawks picked up there game to really
pressure Mythago, bring the score to about 7-9 to Mythago. The game
capped and Mythago won in the end, but only by a point or so I recall.

The final, hmmm, well played Catch. Catch 22 certainly outclassed the
Skunks, but if only the Skunks could have over come their historical
inability to move the disc 2 yards over a single white line the score
line could have been a lot closer. The major advantage to Catch was
their long game, with many of their points being scored with the quick
break on turnover and huck up field to a well positioned player. I think
it is safe to say that the final was very well spirited, all calls
sorted quickly and fairly. Skunks suffered a bit when 2 of our players
hit heads resulting in a lot of blood, an ambulance, and no subs.

But for all those interested, Byron "Mincer" Stevens is fine and has a
little bald patch with 5 stitches, whilst Rich has to wear a big Sticky
Patch on his chin for the week.

Final Placings Were:

1 - Catch 22
2 - Skunks 1
3 - Mythago
4 - Mohawks
5 - Ow! (plate)
