Fellow ultimaters and britdisc readers,

Long time reader, first time 'mailer.'

Is it me or is anyone else bored with this debate? (Oh, how you'll spot the
irony as I now proceed to contribute my own two-penneth over the next few
paragraphs, but for those still bothering to read, please bear with me, I
may have a point...) Several issues seem to have been raised, here's how I
see it:

1. A team who should have been line for the next spot got "shafted" for
which they have my sympathies - I couldn't agree more, they should have been
offered the spot and a system should be put in place to stop cock-ups like
this happening again (ie. someone should simply check who is 'next in line'
from that region, offer them the spot subject to "a cheque been received
within XX days otherwise we ask the next in line", job done).

2. Inexplicably, this seems to have turned into a debate on how many spots
should be allocated to each region, but what is becoming painfully apparent
from all the various e-mails going around is that equal spots for each
region appears to be the best solution because (in summary):

- No one can judge the strength of any one team as squads vary due to years,
seasons, term times, rosters, availability, performance on the day.
- No one can judge the strength of any one region because no one can judge
the strength of any one team, and anyone can chose their region.
- It's fair.

It seems to me that some teams are lobbying for more places for their region
at the expense of others. If you feel that say for example any of the top 6
midlands teams would have finished in the Nationals top 10, but only 4 can
qualify and your team finished 5th, then tough. Next time play better and
get in the top 4 (then go to Nationals and prove it), after all this is a
sport and as such has to have an element of competitiveness, in this
instance generated by the number of qualifying spots.

Likewise, it's easy to say you would have made National top 10, but who can
discount the 'upset' factor (as seems to have happened at some regional
events) - it's always possible in sport. Some years ago my (then) team
Fingers 6 qualified for our first Nationals at the expense of our friends
(the much better 'on paper') Chevron Action Flash2 in one of the best games
of ultimate I've ever participated in. Alright, we got tonked left, right
and centre in the Nationals, and I have no doubt that CAF2 would have fared
much better (again based on that 'on paper' criteria), but just to qualify
was a great achievement for us in itself. You cannot predict these results
in advance otherwise what would be the point. And you cannot deny teams the
opportunity for these kinds of success (Ultimate is still one of the few
sports which places an emphasis on measuring success by performance and less
on positions. ie. teams can sometimes consider 10th a good result, where as
in other sports nothing but 1st is acceptable). The only solution: keep it
even, keep it fair (as is the spirit).

That's my thoughts (but feel free to discount the views of someone who,
admittedly, no longer plays indoors anyway after Chevron's hilariously poor
display last year!!).

Ad (obviously bored at work).
