This weekend saw the third ever National Junior Outdoors. Eleven junior
teams took part (The most we've ever had, but a bit disappointing with six
'likely' teams missing).

The only seedings upset from the pool matches was Southern Lights (new
team from Lewes, Sussex) making the top 8. Discult and Nads finished 9-
9, but Discult won the group by conceding no goals against Lemon and
Ecstatic.

Saturday night consisted of a Disco which was enjoyed by most, but a
few juniors were annoyed by the bar demanding ID off of anyone who may
be under 18. Not half as annoyed as the National Youth coordinator being
asked for ID. Now, most people may be flattered, being mistaken for a 17
year old; but at 27, I was not impressed.

Sunday morning, the weather had deteriorated, with a strong wind blowing
down the pitches. Zone time. Five of the junior teams seemed quite
confident throwing zones, and most were not phased playing against it.

Vicious Circle came closest to an upset in the quarter finals, taking
Discult to 9-9 (both teams managing to score upwind 3 times). Sudden
Death, Discult (having had to resort to calling the blatant travels to slow
Circle down) playing upwind, make no mistakes, and go through to the
semis.

In the semis, Hint of Lime beat Nads 9-6, and Discult surprised Blue Arse
Flies 11-6 (BAF enjoyed their night clubbing in Portsmouth a little too
much).

Lower down, Hurricane claw back from being 5 points down against Tattva
(Hurricane had almost lost on Saturday to Flowering Garden being 10-5
down but scored the last 7 points), but couldn't contain Vicious Circle in
the 5th/6th play off. Hint of Lemon won the spoon by beating Flowering
Garden and Ecstatic.

So, Final time. Hint of Lime, having been seeded top, playing at home,
and now being watched by many parents, started to feel the pressure.
Discult continued to play their 'Wimbledon' style tactics in the wind,
having had so much success already with their trusted set play (Jo huck it
to Chris, or Chris huck it to Jo). To the untrained eye, this may have
appeared to be a 2-man team, but it was a great team effort, especially on
D to contain the strength of Lime.

The standard of play in the final was extremely high considering the
conditions, with very few errors from either team. Discult's four, very
talented 'beginners' from Millfield school had improved dramatically. The
main core of the GB Junior's team will come from those that played in this
final, which bodes well for this year's Europeans.

The teams traded points, scoring down wind to 3-2, until Discult scored
upwind thanks to an awesome sidearm huck into the wind from Chris (one
of many that impressed Patch, the GB Juniors Manager on the sideline).
Discult got another upwind point, and took the half 9-4.

Hint of Lime came out more determined in the second half, and broke
Discult's zone to score upwind, only to have Discult score straight back.
Great, notable performances from James, Paul, Alex and Grant for Lime in
stopping the short passes from Chris and Jo, but they still couldn't out sky
them on the hucks. With time ticking away, Lime still needed to score 3
upwind points. They achieved it once more, but Discult ended up winning
12-10.

The whole tournament had been organised superbly by a group of 'GNVQ
Tourism' students (only one of them played Ultimate) who did this as part
of their course. Games ran on time, matches were scored, refreshments
and meals were great, publicity was everywhere (posters, Cable TV,
Newspaper reporters, Meridian TV, etc.) It was hard to fault this
tournament. They even arranged the lousy weather to suit Discult's game.

Sorry this report has been so long. It's just such a nice surprise when
tournaments are run this well, and when a team you coached perform well.
A good time was had by all, and great to see four new outdoor teams. I
suspect the dates for this tournament will be different next year as we aim
for 20 junior teams competing.
