It appears to me that medical cover is not provided at tournaments for one
of two reasons:
1) The cost is prohibitive
2) The tournament directors make a profit (Not aimed at any t.d. in
particular) at the expense of medical care.

On the issue of medical care, I have taken the initiative and done some
searching on costs.
I contacted St John's Nottingham about getting an example quote for the last
tournament (SNOUT)
with the facts as:
Tournament on 4 - 5 May

2 day's cover needed: Sat and Sun, 9 am - 6pm on both days.

Injuries seen are mainly grazes, sprains, and occasional broken bones and
the like.

The estimate cost for this will be approximately £160 for the weekend (£80 a
day) for 2 St John Ambulance people.

The maximum cost envisaged will be £110 a day (+ VAT) , but this will be the
highest cost. To me this sounds like very good value, with the cost per day
being as little as 27 pence a day, or just over 50 pence for the weekend per
player.
This extra cost seems to be very important for the reassurance a St John's
medic will bring.

Extra Facts: Each county has different policies on payment so this is not a
UK standard

There are national standards in place towards the running of such events -
such as the Green guide (A guide to safety at sports grounds by the Health
and Safety Executive) and its colourful companion the purple guide (the
event safety guide, a guide to health and safety and welfare at music and
similar events).

The purple guide lays down a basic structure and guide for first aid cover,
which the green guide does not stipulate so much. Ultimately (no pun
intended) it may be worth getting a risk assessment for the event.

To me it appears that by setting up some official guidelines now will result
in the level of first aid cover being up to the standard of relevant
guidance. Finally the ultimate choice is to be prepared to be sued by a
competitor because the t.d. did not arrange first aid cover and done a
appropriate risk assessment. Are any t.d's willing to go to the courts and
answer why appropriate HSE guidance was not followed.

Can anyone confirm if t.d.'s are aware of this literature and more
importantly implement the minimum standards? I admit I was not aware of
them when I was a t.d. for the Loughborough nationals this year.

Your comments please.
