Hello
Having read with interest the responses to the Medicare issue, I feel i should respond.
Fortunately in Nottingham, the hospital and therefore Medical college are less than half a mile from the tournament site. We have more than one medic within the ranks of the team, and several first aiders.
St Johns Ambulance... cost approximately £160 as suggested in a previous email. I am at this point awaiting our finance to be returned as they did not show. They were booked. We realised that there was no cover at the Mixed Tour 1 event. And our own Tom Mendez took on the role with his more than adequate kit. Being a qualified Doctor, we felt this was enough at the time. There was no opportunity to discuss this between events, but as Mendez was unable to attend SNOUT, we purchased a first aid kit and endeavoured to have a 1st Aider at the Tents at all times.
Over both weekends, 1st Aid was a major part of the ongoing concern and we feel that we did quite well, generally. As Mr Vitali suggested recently, there is no real need for St Johns, and when i did speak to them, their response was that they had a busy period and could not cover either events. There is a major need for First Aid, Quality Advice and Equipment at most events, and possible an on-site ambulance if the venue is distant from an A&E. (When i fractured my clavicle (collar bone) some time ago at a tourny, the ambulance had just left with another patient leaving the site without cover at all... I waited over a half hour for its return, and finally had a friend drive me to the hospital - if nothing else this demonstates that there is a need to look at what is actually neccesary)
We did have 1disolcation at the ankle and 1 at the shoulder, a few twists and sprains, one break and lots of generals stuff, cuts, strains and cramps.... I would be interested to hear of others (this does not include Lorrie of Random/Discophilia with the external scaffolding - anyone got a piture yet?). I have heard this suggested before, perhaps it would be an essential item, the UKU 1st Aid kit at events and also perhaps a designated group of 1st Aiders who could cover some events each.
Alternatives to St Johns (who have a reputation for unavailability, i would recommend the Red Cross or the Paramedics, who both offer similar services. I would like to see the Green and Purple guides and would consider them being issued to ALL Tournament Directors. H&S is a very important matter. Cost is not really prohibitive, and i cannot believe that a TD would knowledgably ignore the need for 1st Aid with a view to making a profit
We also have an accident book and when i looked through the injuries list (my own observations) over half the injuries could have been prevented through WARMING UP or better equipment. People with ankle/knee injuries who insist on playing should definately wear some kind of support or protective.
Just to summize.
Yes we booked St Johns, no, they didn't attend and yes we attempted to cover the situation.
Yes, we think, there should be more focus on Medic cover 'officially' particularly with regards as to what is neccesary to such a kit & presonnel.
Our apologies that your first aid needs were not met.
