Hello,

This message should only be received by people who are still subscribed to
the *old* britdisc mailing list. If you've been paying attention to your
mail over the last few weeks, then you'll know that BritDisc has been moved
to a new server and the old one is being closed down.

This should be the last e-mail you will receive through BritDisc, as I will
be unsubscribing everyone manually today.

Please see the attached e-mail for instructions on how to join the new list
if you haven't done so already.

Thanks,
	Ralf

Hello!

Just sending a final reminder to everyone who's still using the original
BritDisc.

The original mailing list will be closed down at the end of next week, so
anyone who has not transferred over to using the new list will stop
receiving BritDisc mail. They will be sent a final final reminder message
then, to explain that they are unsubscribed, but that's all.

This does not affect those using e-groups to receive the "britdisc daily" as
I am working with Lawrence to move all active subscribers over automatically
towards the middle of next week. However, if you want to change over
yourself in readiness, that's fine.

Remember also, that from the end of next week, you MUST use the new mailing
list address to post, i.e. use:

	britdisc@near.me.uk

The old address, britdisc@csv.warwick.ac.uk, will be set up to return an
error message.

The original posting is below - this contains information about how to
subscribe to the new BritDisc, as well as how to unsubscribe from the old
BritDisc.

One last thing - I've noticed that at some point the old mailing list was
subscribed to by a mail archiving program. As this has shown up in search
engines, etc, I'll make sure that address stays subscribed to the new list.
If you're interested, you can find these archives at
http://www.mail-archive.com/britdisc%40near.me.uk/ and
http://www.mail-archive.com/britdisc%40csv.warwick.ac.uk/ for older
messages. Note, though, that these are not complete archives and I am still
working on "official" archives.

Cheers,
	Ralf.

======================= 8< --------------------------------

Dear all,

As many of you probably know, BritDisc has been running at the University of
Warwick, ever since I set it up in 1996. Officially, the list should have
been closed down when I ceased to be employed by the university, except for
the fact that Dave "Sammy" Neilson kindly agreed to look after it whilst I
went travelling in Australia.

The university asked me to move to list somewhere else now that Sammy is
leaving for New Zealand and no-one else employed by the University wants to
take it over. It is also true that there are a lot of "dead" e-mail
addresses subscribed to BritDisc which is creating somewhat of an
administrative chaos.

If you have been following the sporadic discussions on BritDisc about the
mailing list, you will see that there has been general uncertainty about
where to move the list as well as a number of complaints about missing
features, such as message digests.

Since then, I have started a project which required setting up permanent a
internet connection, and so I have full access to a machine which is able to
host britdisc adequately. I have taken the opportunity to migrate to newer
mailing list software that should be able to clean itself of "dead"
addresses more easily, and so I have started to move BritDisc onto the new
server (hence the occasional test messages you may have seen).

Features of the new list
------------------------

If you prefer to receive BritDisc in digest form, this is now possible.
People using the e-groups digest facility should move over to using this
digest system if they wish to be able to post messages.

Posting to the new mailing list will be restricted to subscribers only.
Initially, this will not be enforced to ease migration, but this will be
enforced after the migration period.

There is a web interface available to manage your account. You can modify
your settings, for instance whether you receive a digest instead of
individual messages, and also temporarily suspend the account, for instance
whilst on holiday.

You will receive a monthly password reminder, which contains information
about how to unsubscribe and how to access the archive pages, etc.

How to use the new list
-----------------------

To subscribe to the list, you can either send a mail to
britdisc-request@near.me.uk with the subject "subscribe" or by clicking
here:
	mailto:britdisc-request@near.me.uk?subject=subscribe

Alternatively, you may prefer to subscribe from the web interface by
clicking here:
	http://pootle.near.me.uk/mailman/listinfo/britdisc

To post to the list, please use the NEW address britdisc@near.me.uk

It is suggested that you also unsubscribe yourself from the old list - to do
that send a mail to majordomo@csv.warwick.ac.uk with the line "unsubscribe
britdisc" in the message body. I will also be periodically removing new
subscribers from the old list.

After a transitional period, anyone who is still subscribed to the old list
will be unsubscribed from britdisc completely. I am preferring an "opt-in"
to the new list, as there are many, many dead addresses subscribed.

The BritDisc archive will be moved to a new home, and will also be made
searchable. This will be announced more formally on completion.

If you currently use a mail filter, you are advised to change your rules to
look at one of the following headers:

	Sender: britdisc-admin@near.me.uk
	X-BeenThere: britdisc@near.me.uk
List-Id: Information about UK disc sports <britdisc.near.me.uk>

If you have any questions regarding BritDisc, please feel free to e-mail me
at britdisc-owner@near.me.uk

Thanks for your attention, and finally thanks to Sammy for looking after the
list for a lot longer than I originally persuaded him to!

Cheers,
	Ralf.
