The following is forwarded from r.s.d ... does this suggest a way to
grow the sport of Ultimate in British universities? Let me see ... 400
regular players at, say, 50 British uni's currently with Ultimate teams
would give us .... 20,000 players without including schools and 'open'
division players!

Worth a thought given that the Sports Council have justed 'upped' their
threshold of active players from 1,000 to 5,000 before granting
recognition status!

At UWO, the fall league consists of 24 teams (4 divisions of 6
teams) with nearly 400 participants. The league was started three years
ago with 4 teams and is the fastest growing IM sport on campus. There
are 3 "C" level divisions and 1 "B" level division, but I doubt that you
will have the talent pool to implement this kind of setup right away.
We run the league once a week (We play on Sundays) and organize socials
and parties at the beginning, middle, and end of season.
There is no entry fee, but we do have a default bond of $50, if you
default once, you lose half of that amount, and if you default again,
you lose it all and get kicked out of the league. We use UPA rules, and
the only person out supervising games is the convenor. This is a very
convienient set up as divisions can be set up in three hour chunks (BTW,
we play timed games, two 25 minute halves) so that there is enough time
to get one game off the field in time for the next.
We have introduced ultimate to many people here at Western, I
suggest that before the first day of the season, preferably during
sign-ups, that you conduct a clinic on rules and strategy for the
players. Make sure that rules are readily availible to inexperienced
players (particularly the "Ultimate in Ten Simple Rules"). Maybe for
the first few seasons, try running the league as a hat league to reduce
attrition for inexperienced players getting frustrated and leaving the
game.

If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask or email.
