A record-breaking weekend. Despite the miserable, grey weather, 43
players participated in the ninth Whitcombe Farm Classic over the
weekend of June 28th & 29th. This was the biggest ever domestic golf
tournament in the UK.
Four rounds of 18 were played, two on each of the 'New' and 'Old'
Courses. At the end of the first round over the New Course, Charlie
Mead's 52 (11 below par) gave him a lead of 5 over Derek's 57. Sam
Neilson lay third on 58. Other contenders were: Simon Luard and Rafi
Freire (60); Liam Young, Conor 'Bof' Davies, and Pete Monk (61).
Round two, over the Old Course, was won by Oz Freire with 53 (10
below par), with Rafi getting 55, Sean Young 56 and Derek 56.
Charlie, Conor and Robin Scott made 59s.
After 2 rounds:
Charlie Mead - 111
Derek Robins - 113
Rafi Freire - 115
Oz Freire - 117
Sean Young - 118
Sam Neilson - 120
Conor Davies - 120
Round three: the New Course again. Charlie (57 & 168) drops another
shot to Derek (56 & 169), and Andy Lucey makes a late charge to join
the top flight also with 56 (& 179). Sam and Conor moved up the
rankings to third equal each with a 59 (& both on 179). Rafi lost the
plot with a 65 (& 180), Oz couldn't find the script at all with a 68
(& 185). Sean finished on 64 (& 182).
Despite the large gap between the the top pair and the next three,
all five made the top group for the final round. This group had a
delayed start so that everyone else could see the final holes played,
so they were not aware of Oz's 56 (& 241), and Rafi's 61 (& 241)
final round scores. Nor of tyro Simon Ailes' basket-in-one at the 9th
- the first ever basket-in-one at Whitcombe.
We joined the final group with four to play, the last being the
punishing Goolagong Dip. Charlie led by five. Derek pulled one back
at the 15th, and another at the 16th, leaving a gap of three for the
final hole. With a gallery of thirty, an tense atmosphere watched as
Derek threw first, threading the disc through the first gap of trees
above the pond, and brushing the second set of tree on the far side
of the pond, landed the disc right under the basket. Huge applause.
The pressure was now on Charlie. His drive was to the left right in
amongst the trees at the back of the pond, but dry and in-bounds. He
managed to find a gap in the trees for his second, out into the
field. Surely a 25 metre lay-up, despite the steeply falling ground
behind the basket would leave him with an easy putt for four and
victory? However, he sensed the crowd would be disappointed with such
a conservative approach, and he went for it, the disc sailing to the
right of the basket and pitching down the hill for a difficult 11
metre steeply uphill putt. This time no mistake with the lay-up and
the match was tied.
Back to the first for the play-off. Derek pulls long, finishing in
the reeds just behind the 'green' some 10 metres from the basket.
Charlie pulls long too, but also left, in the OB area. Derek's lay-up
leaves Charlie needing to make a long 10 metre putt - but there's no
comeback, Derek wins his second Classic in a row.
